Q&A with Ernst Rustenhoven

Q. Can you tell us about yourself and your background?
A.
My name is Ernest, and I’m 37 years old. I’m the CEO of ILGM.com, an e-commerce business that sells cannabis seeds to consumers in the U.S. Prior to taking on this role, I spent about seven years as a venture capital investor with Slingshot Ventures, an Amsterdam-based early-stage venture fund. Before that, I worked in investment banking for around seven years. My experience is largely focused on e-commerce companies in the consumer space, serving as a deal advisor, investor, and now as a CEO.

Q. What is your role on the advisory board of ASIF Ventures?
A.
My role on the advisory board is to help the ASIF board make informed decisions and take the right factors into account when evaluating companies. I’ve seen many businesses and have developed my own vision of what makes a good company, so I assist them in assessing companies with a specific lens and by asking the right questions.

Additionally, with my deal experience, I advise on structuring transactions, considering pre-deal arrangements, and focusing on post-deal priorities. The ASIF team can call me whenever they need to—sometimes they’ll drop a voice memo, and in between meetings, I’ll respond so they can continue their due diligence process. My goal is to guide and support them in making the best decisions possible.

Q. How do you believe ASIF Ventures supports and adds value to the startup and VC ecosystem?
A.
I think that ASIF is very close to entrepreneurial students. For many students who aspire to start a business, ASIF is the first point of contact—a party that shows them there is a world called venture capital, where if you have a good idea and need financing, you can actually get it. I think that’s very important, to help students see and feel that there’s a place they can go to build companies, get funded, and accelerate growth. To me, ASIF is a catalyst for entrepreneurship here in Amsterdam.
